Behind The Shimmy

Behind the Shimmy is a documentary of the Belly Dance Superstars and Desert Roses on the road with Lallapalooza. From the members of BDSS shown (Jillina, Rachel Brice, Amar Gamal, Sonia, Ansuya) you suspect that this was filmed several years ago. Mostly I believe this because Rachel Brice just opened a studio in Portland, Oregon and Ansuya is back teaching in her studio in Miami.

The videographer questions whether it is spirituality or cultural that calls these girls to dance in this style. Its interesting to watch them all on a bus as they practice, get dressed, and discuss future performances. Its just the dancers, the producers and Izzam, their drummer.  As they, move from place to place, they have mirrors duct taped to the windows so they can get their makeup just so. I love it! Now I have to do that.

It was also interesting to watch the audience of a rock show be mesmerized by shimmies and undulations. I love Miles Copeland's idea of bringing belly dance to the main stream instead of expecting the main stream to come to belly dance.  I also loved that they were able to get comments from Jane's Addiction, Incubus and other bands performing on the tour.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants to know more about belly dance.
